3 Lies You Tell Yourself About Getting Things Done

and the truths that can replace them …

Too Much Self-Talk Can Confuse Your Brain

Lie #1 — “I have listed everything on my list and it will be completed by the end of the day. “

I hate to burst your bubble, but unless you have a very short list you will not get everything done. It is almost impossible for a distracted mind to act decisively. Focus will bounce from task to task and you will find your attention spinning (figuratively) and only bits of things will be completed … if at all. Do you want to chase squirrels all day or do ONE thing well?

Truth #1 — Do One Thing Well .

THE ONE THING by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan changed my life. I went from bouncing from one task to another and not finishing the list to feeling a sense of accomplishment when I got my “one thing” done.

The premise of the book is to ask yourself “What is the ONE thing that I can do today so that by doing it everything else is easier or unnecessary.” You may scoff at the idea but trust me and give it a good test. Pick one thing that is essential for you to accomplish today. Do it first and do it well. Stop and analyze how that one thing affected your day…
